Horse riding
Horses and other equines (such as ponies and donkeys) are prohibited from Nature Conservation Act 2014 reserves by default. Equines and equestrian activities, such as horse riding, may be permitted (with restrictions) in a reserve by an activities declaration.
In reserves where they are permitted, horses and other equines are generally restricted to 'equestrian trails' that are defined in the activities declaration. These are almost always management trails (vehicular tracks used for management purposes) and are generally shared with walkers and bicycle riders. Other restrictions may apply as well.
In reserves, horses and other equines are generally not permitted:
- on roads not also defined as equestrian trails
- on management trails not also defined as equestrian trails
- on walking tracks
- off-road or off-track
Equestrian trails are generally indicated with onsite signage.
Equestrian activities such as trail riding are welcome in most areas of the pine plantation estate. This includes several sections of the National Trail at places such as Ingledene and Stromlo. There are cavallettis installed (allowing horse access but excluding vehicles) at Majura Pines, Kowen Forest and Ingledene Forest.
