International Mountain Biking Trail Rating System

Canberra's iconic nature reserves offer excellent riding opportunities for both novice and experienced mountain bikers. To assist riders in preparing for our trails, we use the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) Trail Difficulty Rating System.

This system is a straightforward way to categorise the relative technical difficulty of recreational trails. The IMBA Trail Difficulty Rating System serves several purposes:

  • It helps trail users make informed decisions.
  • It encourages visitors to choose trails that match their skill level.
  • It manages risk and minimises injuries.
  • It enhances the outdoor experience for a diverse range of visitors.
  • It aids in the planning of trails and trail systems.

This system is adapted from the International Trail Marking System used in ski areas worldwide. Many trail networks employ similar systems, particularly those associated with mountain biking resorts.

When planning your next ride, be sure to ask yourself: "Is this trail suitable for me?"
