There are numerous commercial pine plantations in Canberra. Due to their quality road and trail infrastructure, and close proximity to Canberra, these forests are popular for recreation.

The forests also host events such as car rallies.

Please use the formed management trails (roads and fire trails) for recreational activities.

Access may be restricted during fire danger periods.

Plantation areas are managed by the ACT Parks and Conservation Service (PCS).

Many forests are located near nature parks and reserves which offer facilities such as toilets and barbecues.

Ngunnawal Country and People

Plantations in the ACT are located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed and cared for by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years.

For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

Plantation heritage

Prior to 2003, 26,000 hectares of land was managed, including about 16,000 hectares of pine plantation.

In January 2003, approximately 10,500 hectares of the pine plantation estate was destroyed during the Canberra bushfires, leaving only the Kowen Plantation undamaged. Some areas were replanted with pine trees, and boundaries were re-defined in some areas.

Before you go

Prepare by understanding safety and checking alerts.

Forests are hazardous working sites with timber harvesting carried out Monday to Friday year-round. Always avoid logging sites and check signs for restrictions.

In many of the plantation areas, you will need to:

take your rubbish with you (bins are not provided)
bring your own drinking water
check river levels in times of flooding – never enter or drive through floodwater
remember that mobile phone reception may be unreliable
check if dogs are allowed (1080 poison is used in forests areas so always keep pets on leash)

Please abide by rules noted on the signs.

No camping is allowed in forests (except Kowen Forest).
