Namadgi Visitor Centre presents Backcountry Adventures – A photographic exhibition by Andrew Deacon.

Andrew is a keen photographer and backcountry skier. He lives in Canberra with his wife and three adventurous children and works as a doctor at the Canberra Hospital.

“I learnt to use a camera “on the job” with newspaper photojournalists during high school work experience and started my love of photography.”

“I was drawn to the mountains and their flora after leaving school, spending time clambering up, down and along Australian mountains, cliffs and canyons in both summer and winter. I love the immediacy of photography, and its ability to share what is special about a place as the clouds roll through, or the sun sits close to the horizon. I was bitten by the ski bug as a child and am always happy each year when the temperature falls and the storms come through.”

“For me, there is nothing more special than being in wild places, with wild weather, and sharing them with people I am close to. My wife artist Penny has taught me to look closely at the small details, the colours in the leaves, the curves of the tree branches, how a stunted snow gum struggles in the wind. Our children help me enjoy each of these moments.”

Opportunity to take a guided walk-through bushland on the Congwarra track at Tidbinbilla and learn a few basic bushwalking skills as we go.

Walk along a 3.1 km formed bush track which is mostly flat with some gentle hills to challenge us. The track includes some rocky sections, offering opportunities to develop awareness of varying terrain while enjoying the natural environment.

Throughout the walk, we will learn and practice safe and comfortable bushwalking techniques. Participants will take turns in leadership roles, carrying the map, setting the pace, and assisting with group navigation to build confidence, responsibility, and teamwork skills.

In this fun, interactive activity kids can take a close-up look at our local Macroinvertebrates (Waterbugs) and see how these brilliant bugs can indicate the health of a freshwater river or wetland.

Experience a true taste of the Australian bush! Join us for freshly brewed Billy Tea and warm Damper, a traditional bush bread once cooked by swagmen and stockmen over an open campfire.

Kids can mix up their own damper and cook it over an open fire, and we’ll also brew up some billy tea to wash it down.

‘Cubby House Rules’ is back for the school holidays. Using the materials provided and a little creativity, kids can build their own dream cubby, right in the heart of Tidbinbilla.

Come and learn about King Arthur, Lady Yellow and Princess Annii, Tidbinbilla’s resident ‘royal’ koalas! Koalas have featured and delighted visitors at Tidbinbilla for almost 100 years and continue to be a favourite animal attraction.

Have you ever seen a Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby? Not in the wild in the ACT that’s for sure!
This species was last seen in the wild in the ACT in 1959 – at Tidbinbilla. Today, it can still be seen at Tidbinbilla – behind predator proof fences where they can live their lives in safety.

Join a member of the Threatened Species Team for a walk along the Barayngu Murawung track for a chance to see these elusive animals. You will find out all about this species, why it has disappeared, and what the ACT Government is doing at Tidbinbilla to get this species back into the wild where it belongs!

This is an 800m walk with a gentle slope.

The wander will be approximately 50 minutes. Remember to wear good walking shoes, bring drinking water, dress appropriately for the weather and be sun safe.
