Grevillea Park is a 13.5 hectare area on the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin’s East Basin.

The park has pleasant views across the lake to Jerrabomberra Wetlands, Kingston and Parliament House.

The sandy beach and boat ramp provide easy access for watercraft (power boats are prohibited). Model boats also use the area.

The park offers great pedestrian and cycle access to explore Lake Burley Griffin and the Molonglo River.

There are no barbecues and the water is not suitable for swimming.

A restaurant is nearby.

Dogs are welcome on-leash as outlined on the dog exercise area map and are prohibited within 10 metres of a public play space, fireplace or barbecue in use.

Ngunnawal Country and People

Grevillea District Park is located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years.

For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

European heritage

Walter Burley Griffin named key areas after indigenous Australian flora in his 1918 plan for Canberra. One of these places was ‘Grevillea Place’ on the southern shore of East Basin, however this name was lost in the late 1920s.

In 1963, when Lake Burley Griffin was under construction, the name was resurrected. The gazette naming the park stated that the genus Grevillea comprised "about 240 known species of trees and shrubs, widespread in Australia".

The park development was started in the early 1960s. Plantings were informal with mixed species of eucalypts and wattles to link with the nearby landscape of Mount Pleasant.
