Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve is a 140-hectare grassland protected area in the south-west of the Gungahlin Valley.

Passive, low-impact recreational activities, such as walking and birdwatching using existing tracks, are compatible with the sensitive natural values of this reserve.

Cycling, including mountain bike riding, is not permitted in the reserve.

No dogs or horses allowed.

Natural values

Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve protects:

a large remnant of critically endangered Natural Temperate Grassland
grassland habitat for several nationally or regionally rare and threatened plant species
one of the largest known populations of the vulnerable Striped Legless Lizard (Delma impar)
a population of the endangered Golden Sun Moth (Synemon plana)
one of few known habitats for the vulnerable Perunga Grasshopper (Perunga ochracea)
critically endangered Yellow Box–Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland, on the reserve's western and northern ridgetops
habitat trees for the vulnerable Superb Parrot (Polytelis swainsonii)

Ngunnawal Country and People

Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve is located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed and cared for by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years.

For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

The ACT Heritage Register lists one Aboriginal heritage site within the reserve and there are likely other, as-yet-unrecorded sites protected within the reserve.

All Aboriginal places and objects in the ACT are protected under the Heritage Act 2004 and must not be disturbed. Aboriginal places and objects within reserves are additionally protected under the Nature Conservation Act 2014. Anyone finding an (unregistered) Aboriginal object or place has an obligation to report it to the Heritage Council.

European heritage

Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve has a long history of stock grazing. Presently about a third of the reserve is exotic pasture, another third native pasture lacking in forb diversity, and the final third, critically endangered Natural Temperate Grassland.

Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve was established in 1995. An environmental offset extended the reserve in 2014.

leaving what you find, including plants, animals, rocks and timber (dead and alive)
respecting our heritage - leave cultural sites undisturbed
collecting and responsibly disposing of your dog's droppings (where dogs are permitted)
cleaning your outdoor gear, including bicycles, to avoid spreading weeds and disease

Remember:

bring your own drinking water
carry a mobile phone, especially if you are on your own
let someone know where you are going and when you'll return
be bushfire alert - on total fire ban days some reserves may be closed

How to get there

Mulanggari Grasslands Nature Reserve can be accessed from Gungahlin Drive and from various points in Franklin.
