Ngunnawal Country and People

Woden Town Park is located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years. For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

The park adjacent to it was renamed ‘Arabanoo’ after a member of a northern harbour clan, in the region we now call Sydney. Arabanoo, who was captured at Manly on 31 December 1788 by order of Governor Phillip, worked as an intermediary to improve relations between the Aboriginal people and the colonists. Arabanoo helped care for the local Aboriginal community during a smallpox epidemic until he died of the disease on or about 18 May 1789.

European heritage

The park was developed in the 1980s. It was completed in the bicentennial year of European settlement of Australia.
