Black Mountain Peninsula District Park is one of the best parts of Lake Burley Griffin for water-based recreation including canoeing, rowing and sailing.

The 22 hectare foreshore parkland has picnic areas, barbecues, walking trails and water activities for the whole family.

The playground is suitable for toddlers and young children. The modern play equipment includes a wheelchair accessible swing.

Ngunnawal Country and People

Black Mountain Peninsula District Park is located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years.

For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

European heritage

In 1916, Walter Burley Griffin saw the area as part of his 'continental arboretum' on the lower southern slopes of Black Mountain. This vision didn’t proceed. Instead, in the 1960s, a waterside recreation area was developed.

This plan involved retaining and strengthening the existing native landscape sweeping down from Black Mountain along the ridge.

Deciduous species and willows (Salix sp.) were introduced on the shoreline. The swamp cypress (Taxoduim distichum) and the local river oak (Casuarina cunninghamiana) were planted for bank protection and aesthetic purposes. More native species were planted in the 1980s.

Black Mountain Peninsula District Park is located off Lady Denman Drive on the north side of West Lake at Garryowen Drive.

It is adjacent to the shared path encircling Lake Burley Griffin.

There is plenty of time-limited parking onsite.
