Ngunnawal Country and People

Stromlo Pines is located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed and cared for by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years.

For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

Plantation heritage

The plantations were almost destroyed in the 2003 Canberra bushfires. Today, the remnants of plantations are managed for timber harvesting.

After the bushfires, the destroyed areas were revegetated and now feature National Arboretum Canberra and Stromlo Forest Park.

Before you go

Prepare by:

understanding safety, especially during fire danger periods or flooding
checking alerts

Remember:

check signage as pine forests are hazardous working sites – avoid active logging sites
do not light a fire
motorised vehicles are not permitted
do not collect timber (timber collection from hardwood and pine forests is prohibited)
follow the expected safety and trail etiquette as a mountain bike rider
camping is not permitted

How to get there

Stromlo Pines can be accessed from:

the National Arboretum Canberra by foot/bike
the National Trail to the southern side of the forest
River Road at the National Arboretum Canberra
Harold White Avenue in Coombs (parking is available on the side of the road) – the National Trail starts there. Parking is available on the side of the road before the gate
