Mount Mugga Mugga Nature Reserve is a 148-hectare protected area on the eastern edge of the Woden Valley. The reserve connects with Red Hill and Isaacs Ridge nature reserves to its north and south, and offers great views of the Woden and Jerrabomberra valleys.

Mount Mugga Mugga Nature Reserve is part of an extensive landscape of remnant wooded vegetation providing connectivity and enabling wildlife movement through to NSW in the east, to the Murrumbidgee River in the west, and to the southern ACT through Tuggeranong Hill and Rob Roy Range nature reserves.

Cycling is only permitted on management trails and on the Centenary Trail.

Dogs are permitted on-leash on a track or trail only.

Horses are not allowed.

Natural values

Mount Mugga Mugga Nature Reserve protects:

part of one of the largest, best-connected and most diverse areas of critically endangered Yellow Box–Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland remaining in Australia
important breeding and foraging habitat for woodland birds, including the threatened Diamond Firetail (Stagonopleura guttata), Hooded Robin (Melanodryas cucullata) and Speckled Warbler (Chthonicola sagittata)
habitat for the vulnerable Pink-tailed Worm-lizard (Aprasia parapulchella) and Perunga Grasshopper (Perunga ochracea)
Wedge-tailed Eagles (Aquila audax) that nest and breed on the reserve's eastern slopes

The vulnerable Little Eagle (Hieraaetus morphnoides) has previously been recorded as breeding within the reserve.

Isaacs Ridge-Mount Mugga Mugga ParkCare undertakes regular volunteer environmental activities including planting and weed control.

Ngunnawal Culture and People

Mount Mugga Mugga Nature Reserve is located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed and cared for by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years.

For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

Mount Mugga Mugga Nature Reserve protects several known Aboriginal heritage sites including stone artefacts occurring individually and in scatters on the surface. Other, as-yet-unrecorded sites likely also exist within the reserve.

All Aboriginal places and objects in the ACT are protected under the Heritage Act 2004 and must not be disturbed. Aboriginal places and objects within reserves are additionally protected under the Nature Conservation Act 2014. Anyone finding an (unregistered) Aboriginal object or place has an obligation to report it to the Heritage Council.

European heritage

Early 20th century plantings within the reserve (initiated by Walter Burley Griffin and supervised by Charles Weston) continue to flourish. Species include Argyle Apple (Eucalyptus cinerea), White Box (Eucalyptus albens) and Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha).

The adjoining Mugga Quarry provided hard quartz porphyry which when crushed provides a good clean 'metal' well suited to making concrete – essential in the building of early Canberra in the 20th century.

Mount Mugga Mugga Nature Reserve was established in 1993 and extended in 2005.

leaving what you find, including plants, animals, rocks and timber (dead and alive)
respecting our heritage - leave cultural sites undisturbed
riding safely and following trail etiquette as a bicycle rider
collecting and responsibly disposing of your dog's droppings (where dogs are permitted)
cleaning your outdoor gear, including bicycles, to avoid spreading weeds and disease

bring your own drinking water
carry a mobile phone, especially if you are on your own
let someone know where you are going and when you'll return
be bushfire alert - on total fire ban days some reserves may be closed

How to get there

Mount Mugga Mugga Nature Reserve can be accessed from Mugga Lane in Symonston and various locations in O'Malley.
