Kinlyside Nature Reserve is a 228-hectare protected area located in the north-west of the ACT.

The reserve forms part of a 2000-hectare area of critically endangered Yellow Box–Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland in the northern ACT, providing important wildlife habitat and a wildlife movement corridor linking to the Majura valley, the Molonglo River valley and into NSW.

Public entry to Kinlyside Nature Reserve is presently not permitted. The reserve is presently under a rural lease and formally closed to the public under the Nature Conservation Act 2014.

Dogs and horses are not allowed.

Natural values

Kinlyside Nature Reserve protects:

a large area of critically endangered Yellow Box–Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland
an understorey that includes several plant species considered rare in the ACT
important habitat for threatened and regionally declining woodland birds, including the Diamond Firetail (Stagonopleura guttata), Southern Whiteface (Aphelocephala leucopsis) and Varied Sitella (Daphoenositta chrysoptera)
habitat for a large population of endangered Golden Sun Moth (Synemon plana) and a smaller population of vulnerable Pink-tailed Worm-lizard (Aprasia parapulchella)

The Canberra Ornithologists Group has monitored bird populations in the area since 1998.

Ngunnawal People and Country

Kinlyside Nature Reserve is located on Ngunnawal Country, an ancient and diverse landscape managed and cared for by Ngunnawal people for tens of thousands of years.

For time immemorial Ngunnawal people have maintained a tangible and intangible cultural, social, environmental, spiritual, and economic connection to these lands and waters.

Kinlyside Nature Reserve protects 30 Aboriginal heritage sites listed on the ACT Heritage Register, including stone artefacts occurring individually and in scatters on the surface, and several scarred trees, from which bark and timber were removed for cultural uses. Other parts of the reserve are likely to contain other, as-yet-unrecorded, Aboriginal heritage sites.

All Aboriginal places and objects in the ACT are protected under the Heritage Act 2004 and must not be disturbed. Aboriginal places and objects within reserves are additionally protected under the Nature Conservation Act 2014. Anyone finding an (unregistered) Aboriginal object or place has an obligation to report it to the Heritage Council.

European heritage

European settlement of the Gungahlin region dates from the 1850s, when localised land-clearing began in the valleys. While stock grazing has been the main rural activity, some cropping was carried out on the alluvial flats. Kinlyside Nature Reserve features some remnants of 19th century land use.

The reserve was established in 2014 as an environmental offset.
