New wombat sighting portal launched

Canberrans have a new web portal for reporting wombat sightings in the ACT, in the first stage of a joint community and government project.

The ACT Government is working with ACT Wildlife and Wombat Rescue to map wombat abundance and distribution across the ACT including the prevalence of wombat mange.

When you choose to report a sighting, the portal asks for details about the wombat’s health and location. This will help connect our wildlife carers with animals requiring treatment, and government to collect information on wombat distribution and health across the ACT.

Volunteers from Wombat Rescue and ACT Wildlife carer groups monitor the portal and aim to assess the sick wombats quickly. Where possible, they will provide treatment.

The outcome of the volunteers' investigations is reported on the portal. The community can see how many wombats have been cared for and learn more about the ACT Government’s work on combating wombat mange on the ACT Environment website.
